Functional and Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Gregory H. Branham, MD, Editor
I am excited to present this issue solely devoted to the upper and lower eyelids and surrounding periorbital tissues. Rather than addressing only cosmetic procedures, we wanted to address the periorbital region from both a reconstructive and an esthetic approach. It is my firm belief that each of these approaches to the periorbital region enhances the knowledge and skill of the periorbital surgeon.

While the title conveys a concentration on the eyelids, the editor and each contributor understand and convey a comprehensive approach to the periorbital region. In the past, eyelid surgery was viewed as isolated procedures performed alone or in conjunction with other aging facial procedures. State-of-the-art rejuvenation of the periorbital region focuses on restoring the natural youthful contours of the region through a combination of surgical and nonsurgical techniques.

Reconstruction of the upper and lower eyelids is essential to maintain function and preserve vision, and many of the principles utilized in reconstructive procedures apply to the esthetic restoration of the periorbital region. There is no doubt that the esthetic surgeon is made better by the use of these reconstructive tools and vice versa.

I would like to thank all of the contributors who worked diligently to provide the latest information on this subject. It is an honor and privilege to call them colleagues. They represent the best and most experienced in this field and have labored to provide their expertise to you in this issue. I have learned much from each of them and commend their knowledge to you.
