Aesthetic surgery of the eyelids and periorbita is a unique component of plastic surgery. This is because the development and refinement of surgical and nonsurgical rejuvenative procedures inherent to this area of the face are founded on the contributions of specialists from various disciplines—primarily plastic surgery, facial plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, and dermatology. As such, a comprehensive reference on cosmetic interventions tailored to enhance the appearance of the eyelids and adjacent structures can only be complete with a multidisciplinary approach constructed with contributions from of each these core specialties. From this thinking, this volume of Clinics in Plastic Surgery, “Brow and Upper Eyelid Surgery: Multidisciplinary Insights,” was born. A second volume dedicated to the lower lids and midface with a similar format and authorship will follow soon.
The forehead/eyebrows and upper lids act as an aesthetic unit. They intimately interact to convey expression, mood, demeanor, and thought. In addition, their function is critical to protecting the eyes and maintaining our most important sense—vision. Clearly, an in-depth understanding of the form and function of these dynamic structures is essential for all practitioners involved in their cosmetic enhancement.
In this text we sought out the expertise of leaders in each of the 4 core specialties mentioned above so that we could present a truly comprehensive, diverse, and multidisciplinary view of aesthetic forehead/eyebrow lifting, upper blepharoplasty, and pertinent associated noninvasive cosmetic refinements. This project was an invaluable and enjoyable experience that allowed us the opportunity to unite, debate, compare, and contrast different views on the same basic principles and procedures. From the experience, we feel we are better practitioners and surgeons. In addition the experience reinforced our strong belief that only through sharing ideas from varied backgrounds and ranges of experience can we develop the most contemporary and forward thinking reference on this ever-evolving area of facial cosmetic surgery.
We would like to thank all the contributing physicians for their time, which we know is limited to start with. We are only the gatekeepers and without their valued efforts there is no project. Also, we had the good fortune of working with Elsevier, a great publisher, with a wonderful staff, who never said no to anything we asked for. We are especially thankful to Joanne Husovski, our Senior Editor at Clinics in Plastic Surgery , who was by far the most invaluable resource and point person anyone could ask for. To our 4 contributing section editors, Jennifer Kim, MD, Farzad Nahai, MD, Julie Woodward, MD, and Doris Day, MD, we are indebted beyond words. You all did the real work, while our job was to smile at how easy it was to put together such an already finished product. Finally, we are both fortunate to have families and friends who support us in our varied professional endeavors. This is the greatest gift of all as their sacrifices are what allow us to grow and enhance our love for what we do.
