CASE 42

Androgenetic alopecia

QUESTION 42

A 62-year-old woman presents to the dermatology clinic for evaluation of hair loss. She reports that she has noticed progressive thinning of her hair over the last 10 years. She experiences both increased shedding of hair and thinning of hair shafts and does not experience any scalp symptoms such as pruritus, scaling or tenderness. She notes a history of hair loss in her mother and sister. On physical examination, there is generalized thinning on the crown and vertex of the scalp with miniaturization of hair follicles (42).
