Abstract

Background

An estimated 207,000 women in the United States received a new breast cancer diagnosis in 2010. Many require mastectomy and even more choose mastectomy to reduce their risk of local recurrence. Many women who have mastectomy will choose to have immediate implant-based reconstruction. With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reapproval of silicone implants and the introduction of various implant types and acellular dermal matric material, esthetic results are vastly improved. In early 2010 Massachusetts convened a statewide multidisciplinary expert panel to study the dynamic changes in this field, identify the best practices for implant-based reconstruction, and recommend a course of action for future practice and data collection efforts. Their report was summarized.
