Abstract

Background

The methods of repair used for defects of the posterior surface of the ear after tumor excision include second intention healing, simple linear closures, and full- or split-thickness skin grafts if the perichondrium and soft tissue are intact. If cartilage is exposed, local flaps are needed because grafts are unlikely to survive if the perichondrum is not intact. Coverage using a graft or flap is associated with less pain, minimal contraction with wound healing, and less risk of chondritis. Many type of flaps can be used. A case was reported in which a posterior auricular artery-n-based myocutaneous pedicle flap (MPF) was used successfully to reconstruct a large defect of the posterior ear with exposed cartilage.
