Latest Innovations in Facial Plastic Surgery: Procedures and Technology

Paul J. Carniol, MD, Guest Editor
Facial plastic surgeons are striving continually to improve their patients’ results and procedure experience. Together with this, they have a desire to innovate and evolve. This desire originates from within the facial plastic surgeons, as well as from their patients and the influence of the media. The issue is, how to stay on “the cutting edge” while performing efficacious, innovative, and relatively safe procedures. This is the challenge.

This issue of Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics is dedicated to emerging trends, technologies, and procedures. The topics covered reflect the latest innovations in facial plastic surgery. These include and are not limited to the latest laser procedures, ultrasound treatment, platelet fibrin matrix gels, stem cell studies, and chemical peel techniques.

While reading each of these articles, please keep in mind that these are all relatively new technologies, techniques, or procedures. Whether these will still be used and favored in a few years remains to be determined. As the authors describe their individual techniques, each surgeon can best envision whether or how these should be incorporated into your practice.

These reviews of procedures/techniques/devices should be considered in light of evidence-based medicine. There may only be limited data as to their potential outcomes and complications. This is frequently the case with innovations in facial plastic surgery. Since these are emerging technologies, products, and procedures, you must make your own assessment as to the indications, technique, efficacy, limitations, and safety. Furthermore, in the future it may be necessary to alter your assessment, depending on further data.

This edition of Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics has very informative articles by authors who have significant experience with the techniques they describe. They stand on the cutting edge in this publication to provide a comprehensive overview of the emerging procedures and tools and discuss the outcomes, considerations, complications, and successes. My thanks to each of them for writing these excellent articles.

Also, my thanks to Joanne Husovski of Elsevier. Any guest editor who has the opportunity to work with her is quite fortunate. She is highly intelligent, insightful, and helpful. Her cheerful optimism is constantly refreshing.

As there is always something new, we anticipate that, in the future, there will be further editions dedicated to the latest innovations in facial plastic surgery. This guest editor always searches for the latest innovations and emerging trends in facial plastic surgery, yet it is not possible to always be aware of the most recent developments for facial plastic surgeons.

Therefore, after you read this edition of Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics , and in the months to follow, please contact the guest editor with any innovations that might be suitable for subsequent emerging trend issues.
