As luck would have it, one after another, within a short period of time, with the contribution of referring colleagues who found out about my interest in autoinflammatory disorders involving the skin, I started to develop a cadre of patients with these, and a keen eye for their diagnosis.
But, with increasing knowledge comes increasing awareness of one’s ignorance, and with that for me came increased concern and desire to understand things. This was further stimulated by the realization that pain and rashes of particular morphologies could be alleviated by specific medication, be it colchicine, well-selected disease modifiers, or biologics against the trigger of their inflammation, ones that intervene at almost gene level.
Obviously, I am not the only one itching to identify patients with these syndromes, as in the process of classifying them, first for my own benefit and then for this issue, I recognized that, case after case, with all kind of variants, were being reported about in every issue of every journal familiar to me as a dermatologist. The seemingly impossible task of creating a practical review for a dermatology journal became a possibility when the consulting editor of this series suggested that I invite some experts to contribute to my effort and make it a reality.
With the invaluable help of my coeditor, Marcial Oquendo, MD, I believe that I have managed to bring together a group of brilliant and expert minds to competently present to the usual dermatology readership of this series, and to those attracted by the subject of autoinflammation, a useful source of information on this field, not yet a decade old, where they can begin to comprehend, diagnose, and treat patients with syndromes and diseases caused by autoinflammation.
