Dr. Jack Anderson referred to facial surgery as “psychological surgery” in that many of the individuals who seek the advice and services of a facial surgeon carry the burden of hurtful comments that have left deep-seated scars in their psyche. The surgeon’s role is to identify the patient’s current self-image, then have an open and honest discussion as to how the surgeon and the patient will need to work in concert for the patient to shed the old self-image and replace it with the new.
For most facial surgeons, performance of the surgical procedures is the easy work. Preoperative screening, counseling, and postoperative nurturing required by a patient undergoing appearance-altering surgery is a greater challenge. The harder work is dealing with the business side of the practice. Hopefully, the following chapters of this book will make that part of the practice easier for future generations of surgeons.
