Restoration of Elbow Flexion with Functioning Free Muscle Transfer in Arthrogryposis: A Report of Two Cases

Abstract

Background

The characteristics of arthrogryposis include nonprogressive, multiple joint contractures present at birth because of neurogenic, myopathic (amyoplasia), or connective tissue disorders. Upper extremity amyloplasia is most seriously expressed as an inability to flex the elbow because of extension contracture of the elbow. Children must be able to flex one elbow to become functionally independent, including self-feeding and performing self-care of the face and hair. Extension of both elbows is needed for independent toileting. Surgical intervention in amyloplasia is designed to achieve active elbow flexion, and many procedures are used. The long-term results with free muscle transfer using the gracilis muscle for restoration of elbow flexion were noted in two patients with arthrogryposis.
