Radial Nerve Disruption Following Application of a Hinged Elbow External Fixator: A Report of Three Cases

Abstract

Background

The use of a hinged or articulated elbow external fixator can be helpful for patients with elbow instability, after extensive capsular release of elbow contractures, after ligamentous reconstruction, for distraction interposition arthroplasty, and to manage complex elbow fracture-dislocations. These devised maintain elbow stability but allow the patient to mobilize the elbow soon after surgery. Transient, but not permanent, radial nerve palsy has been reported after a hinged external fixator has been applied. Three cases were reported of radial nerve palsy caused by complete nerve disruption after a hinged external fixator was used to manage complex elbow injuries.
