Abstract

Background

Rotator cuff injuries are common causes of upper extremity disability and can produce considerable pain and dysfunction. Surgical repair for rotator cuff injuries can be accomplished via open, mini-open, or arthroscopic techniques. Open techniques require a larger dissection and longer operating time. Arthroscopic repairs are associated with a limited working area, longer learning curve, and higher percentage of recurrent lesions compared to the open or mini-open repairs. Surgical repairs using autografts, cadaveric allografts, or patch grafts made of biological and synthetic materials have been developed but donor site morbidity, limited availability of autografts, and risk of disease transmission have limited their usefulness. A novel therapeutic strategy to support and accelerate the healing of a torn rotator cuff was developed via a tissue-engineering approach using a nanostructured resorbable polymeric scaffold. The scaffold was fabricated, biological characterization was achieved in vitro, an original rodent model was developed, and biomechanical characterization was done in vivo.
