Abstract



Background


The management of burns depends on the depth and location of the injury as well as the patient’s age. Depth, conveyed by the term degree, strongly influences the initial treatment of burn injuries. More critical injuries are handled first, often leaving less severe hand and upper extremity injuries until after the more serious burns have been addressed.



Classification


The degree of damage to the epithelium, dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and deeper structures determines the classification of the burn. First-degree burns damage only the epidermis and cause no open wounds or blisters. Often these heal without scarring or surgical intervention.
