Revision Arthroscopic Contracture Release in the Elbow Resulting in an Ulnar Nerve Transection: A Case Report

Abstract

Background

Elbow arthroscopy is performed to remove loose bodies, treat lateral epicondylitis, for synovectomy and contracture release, and to manage osteochondritis dissecans. The rate of complications is higher with elbow arthroscopy than for similar procedures in the knee and shoulder. Neurovascular complications develop in 0% to 14% of cases, with most consisting of transient neurapraxias. Seldom does complete nerve transection occur during elbow arthroscopy. A report detailed a patient who had arthroscopic release of an elbow contracture and suffered complete transection of a previously transposed ulnar nerve.
